PMI® to Release Fourth Edition of the PMBOK® The PMI® have announced plans to update the PMBOK® Guide Third Edition. The updated version is due to be released in December '08 and a "pre-release" was made available to the Registered Education Providers (R.E.P.) community in August. The new version will be named The PMBOK® Guide Fourth Edition. Note: the "pre-release" was recently removed from the R.E.P. community website.
How the Update Will be ImplementedThe PMI® do not update the exam PMP® Exam specifically for a new version of the PMBOK®. Rather, they update the exam on a regular schedule which does not change. They will be updating the exam, replacing 5% of the exam (10 questions) with new questions which will be compatible with the new version. The exam update will happen 6 months after the release of the new version of the PMBOK®. This does not necessarily mean that the new questions will not be compatible with the old version; they may address knowledge from the new version that "overlaps" with the old. Although it's impossible to predict what will be in the new version, we think it's safe to say that the new version will not invalidate everything in the old, because it hasn't in the past.
From that point (July 1, 2009) forward, the exam will be updated according to the regular schedule and new questions will be compatible with the new version, until all the questions are compatible with the new version.
What this Means to Those Planning to Take the ExamDon't panic! You've got lot's of time to make the adjustment. If you're planning on writing the exam any time between now and December '08, this change doesn't affect you.
If you're planning on taking the exam any time between now and July 1 '09 you should stick with a course (or AceIt©) which covers the current version of the PMBOK®, the PMBOK® Guide Third Edition. The exam will be aligned with that material.
If you're planning on taking the exam after July 1 '09, there are two factors you need to consider:
- 5% of the questions will be compatible with the new version. This doesn't necessarily mean you won't be able to answer them if you've taken a course based on the current version, but it does mean that you'll be able to answer them if your knowledge is based on the new version.
- If you take a course now and don't write for 9 months, you'll need to spend a great deal of time reviewing the material you studied to refresh your memory, and this consideration would apply with or without new material.
Our advice is to plan your studies and exam the same way you would normally (see our PMP® Exam Tips, or Certification Timeline pages) and then examine that timeline for the impact of the new version/exam questions. The PMI® plan updates to the PMBOK® in such a way as to nullify and negative impact on their customers (you). You shouldn't have a problem unless the lag between your studying and the exam is greater than 6 months.
We will be creating a new version of AceIt©, which is compatible with new version of the PMBOK®, beginning January '09 and should have it ready for sale on this website by May '09.
